What is Synchronized Skating?

Synchronized skating is a fast-growing, team-based figure skating discipline where 8 to 20 skaters perform in unison on the ice. Teams move at high speeds, executing complex, intricate formations like circles, lines, blocks, wheels, and intersections, all set to music. Competitions exist at local, state, regional, national and international levels.

Team Size and Structure

Teams typically consist of up to 16 skaters on the ice, though 8–20 may be on the roster.

Required Elements

Programs include specialized elements such as intersections (skaters passing closely through each other), wheels, blocks, and creative elements.

Judging

It uses the same International Judging System (IJS) as singles, pairs, and ice dance, focusing on speed, precision, and unison.

Levels

Competition levels range from Aspire (Beginner) to elite senior teams that compete in World Championships.  There are teams available for all ages and abilities
